Day 92: Walker Art Center – FREE 1st Saturdays
Have you ever wanted to take your family to check out the famed Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, but wished you could go for free…at least for your first visit? I find myself feeling that way about a lot of places….it’d be fun to check them out, but I’d like to go for free so I don’t feel guilty if we leave after only a short time. Well, as luck may have it, there are an abundance of opportunities to visit the Walker Art Center for FREE, so definitely take advantage of these chances to acquaint yourself with this art gem right here in our beautiful city. Here’s how to go for FREE:
- The 1st Saturday of every month, admission is FREE for everyone! Open 10am-5pm.
- Target FREE Thursday Nights – admission and programs are FREE to everyone on Thursdays from 5-9pm, all thanks to Target!
- Museum Adventure Pass – Stop by your local Hennepin County Library and use your library card to check out 2 FREE admissions. Passes available weekly on a first come first served basis.
- Children ages 18 and under are always FREE.
The Walker Art Center was formally established in 1927 and was the first public art gallery in the Upper Midwest. They have been in their current building since 2005. And don’t forget the Sculpture Garden with the famous cherry on a spoon (officially named “Spoonbridge and Cherry”)! This garden, adjacent to the Walker Art Center, is one of the nation’s largest urban sculpture parks. You can visit the Sculpture Garden anytime for FREE! Great place to let the kids run around or to go for a late night walk in the summer.
On FREE first Saturdays, families can enjoy live performances, films, gallery adventures, and hands-on art making from 10am-3pm. Activities recommended for ages 6-12. Each month there is a different theme to their activities. For February it’s “Taking Apart the Rules”. Join them for art-making, a film, and a gallery activity that toys with ideas of geometry, instructions, and cubes – all inspired by Sol LeWitt. Next month, on March 5th, the theme is “Going to the Movies” with a stop-motion animation extravaganza curated by Childish Films (screenings at 11am, 1pm and 3pm). And in April the theme will be “Toy Theater in the Light” where kids will have a chance to make their own puppet! Lots of fun on the horizon!!
On the second and fourth Tuesdays of each month, from 11am-1pm, for kids ages 3-5 and adults, the Walker offers Arty Pants: Your Tuesday Playdate! This program is FREE with gallery admission (kids are always free). Come experience art projects, films, gallery activities and story time. Each Tuesday Playdate has a different theme, so make sure to go back again and again!
